tuesday, 10.14 meeting
At our last meeting we had a great demo by Jenn where we learned how to make an easy bayonet clasp. If anyone wants to look at the sample she made again, it's in the metals club cabinet.
We also went over our new box of tools! We got some great new stuff and it's all in the metals club cabinet for paying members to use. Lizzy went over the use of these new tools at the meeting, but if anyone feels unsure or wants more instruction in using these tools, feel free to ask any of the officers.
The Philly Craft Show is the weekend of November 14. The metals club has a budget to pay for up to 12 members stay in a hotel for a night. Please email Lizzy as soon as possible if you are interested in attending this trip. Her email is ehanne1@towson.edu. We would go up on the 14th and stay over night and come back the 15th.
So, unfortunately, the metals and jewelry club did not get into Holiday Heap. Thanks, Jo for collecting all the info for it.
Our next meeting will be Wednesday, October 22nd at 6pm in CA2015. We will, of course, have pizza for everyone. April will also be doing a demo on patinas. Hope to see you there!

Update.
Last Wednesday at our meeting we had an awesome alternative color on metal demo by Jenn. She showed us how to use the bead blaster and how the use of oil paint, pastels, prismacolor colored pencils, and media typically used on paper or canvas can be applied to metal surfaces.
Also, keep in mind that the deadline for applying to Holiday Heap is quickly approaching, so please get any and all images you have of your work to Johanna Haydon. Her email address is jhaydo1@towson.edu.
Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, October 14th at 6pm in CA2015. Once again, we will have pizza and there will be another demo. This time Jenn will demo mechanisms.
Schedule of Upcoming Demos
-Tuesday, October 14 - Mechanisms (Jenn)
-Wednesday, October 22 - Chemical Patinas (April)
-Tuesday, November 11 - Pricing Work and Keum Boo technique (Hiedi)
-Wednesday, November 19 - Earwire (Jenn)
-Tuesday, December 9 - Photographing your work and Resources of suppliers (Jenn)
Thanks to everyone that came out for the last meeting. Hope to see you at the next one!

Club Budget, New Tools!
Attention All Members!
For all of the members of the T.U. Metals and Jewelry Club, I am currently writing the budget for the spring semester. Part of making the budget is deciding on what tools/equipment we would like to ask for. If you have any suggestions about what you would like to have added to our tool cabinet please let me know. You may contact me at my email: sshawv1@towson.edu. Generally we order from the RIO catalog, feel free to browse and send me suggestions.
Thanks!

tuesday, 09.09 meeting
So we had our first meeting last night - thanks everyone for coming out! For those of you who couldn't make it, or for a reminder for those of you who were there, here's a recap.
We introduced our new officers!
President - Lizzy Hanner
Vice President - Dillon Babington
Treasurer - Sherri Shawver
Secretary - Karen Appel
Events Coordinator - Johanna Haydon
Also, we're going to be standardizing all of our meeting times this semester!!! So mark your calenders!! We will meet every 2nd Tuesday and 4th Wednesday of each month at 6pm! Also, there will be a demo at every meeting!! I'll be putting the demo schedule up on the blog later this week, so be sure to check back!
Plans for this semester include sales where you can submit your own work. Holiday Heap is coming up in November and we have to apply this month. So if you have some work, join the club, and put it in the sale!!
We are also doing a canned food drive. All cans should be placed in the box that is in 2015 below our board.
There are so many benefits to joining our club! For one, sitting sales and selling work in our sales is a great experience. Also, we have an advanced tool cabinet that we went through last night that is filled with tons of brand new, really great tools! For you beginners out there, we also have the beginner's bench that is filled with all the necessities for beginning classes.
JOIN!!! If you want to be a member of the Metals and Jewelry Club, our dues are only $15 a semester! These dues are payable (cash/check) only to Sherri and you can only pay for one semester at a time. Checks should be made out to Towson University. Also, we have really cute aprons (in green and black) that are only $15 as well!
Our next meeting will be Wednesday, September 24th at 6pm. We will be having an Alternative Color on Metal Demo. Hope to see you there!!

If anyone would like to donate clothing or toys toward our community service hours, please contact me by Wednesday. I would like to take what we've accumulated down that afternoon. Otherwise, I can give you locations at which you can personally make the donations. The only requirement is a receipt from an approved location.

more flyer ideas.
MOTHER'S DAY sale is coming up so i had flowers on the mind. Here's my take on a flowery design for a sale flyer.
I wasn't sure if i could use this sort of design for the banner but it was fun to draw. The club name and information would go on the right side.
Again, just throwing these ideas out there. I'm open for suggestions. Plus if anyone else wants to sketch up things too that would be great! I didn't want people to think that it was just me.
Like it, hate it, let me know!
Flyer idea
Here's a sketch i did while looking at different examples of iron gates. It's just my first idea... i wrote in the club name just to see how it could be spaced out. I figured we'd want a lot of room to write sale information. But we could just keep the border and not the font because i wasn't really trying to make the words creative. i thought it would be easier to be able to type information and paste inside when making multiple copies for sales. I don't want to use my ideas if anyone doesn't like them. They are just rough ideas.
If we use this kind of design on banners, i'd like to paint other things behind or around but i figured i couldn't do that on the flyers because it would be too hard to print. plus they are usually black on colored paper anyway.

Community Service Opportunity!
So if you didn't know, the metals club is required to complete a certain number of community service hours (since we are an SGA funded club). This is a great opportunity to get involved in the Baltimore area and volunteer to help out in whatever way we can.
Friends of Baltimore Parks Day
Saturday, May 3rd
This is an event going on in a few parks in South and Southwest Baltimore. Activities will include gardening, watering, and general clean up. The group that sponsors this event will be giving out information about the environment and best practices for being "green."
Hopefully by this time the weather will be nice and this event will be simply a great day to be spent outside helping keep Baltimore parks looking good.
The more people who want to get involved, the better. Let me know if you're interested in volunteering!!

towson design collective - share your thoughts!
Next Monday, March 31st, at 5 PM in CA 2006 there will be a brainstorming session to discuss ideas for the Towson design collective (or whatever we want to call it).
What is the Towson design collective, you ask? That's where you come in. It can be anything you want it to be! This is a totally new endeavor that we are creating from the ground up, so everyone's feedback is welcome (and encouraged). As a starting point, some of our inspirations are SCAD's Working Class Studio and Droog Design.
This is a great opportunity for students, alumni, and faculty to help create a flagship program for Towson. Some come by on Monday at 5 to participate in a lively discussion!
(Can't make it - email your ideas to Megan at meauman(at)yahoo(dot)com)

On the Horizon
Mark your carefully-maintained calenders for March 27th at 6:00p.m. in CA 2015 (I think that's the number for the metals room other than 2006). We'll have our next meeting then.
As a reminder, particularly for those who weren't at the last meeting, we're going to try a few one-night sales that will coincidentally coincide with the nights of major performances. Thus, if you want to participate, go ahead an make work so that it can be ready on relatively short notice.
Also, several people have asked me about how I make some of my work with jump rings. Thus, I will be doing a short demonstration at the meeting listed above to explain my electric welder and some other specialized chain tools.
